Before the Vasectomy

Consultation

Because this website explains the entire procedure, Dr. Nélisse or Dr. Caouette does not need to meet his patients before surgery. The day of the intervention, the doctor will ask you a few questions and make sure you understand how the procedure works and he will then do the vasectomy. Exceptionally, the doctor might not be able to perform the vasectomy on patients with severe coagulation problems; who have inguinal hernia which descends in the scrotum, or on patients who have had previous testicular surgery, making the identification of the tubes difficult. In these cases, the doctor will explain other alternatives available for you.

If you would like to meet Dr. Nélisse or Dr. Caouette before the surgery, you can make an appointment with him by simply calling the clinic.

Also, if you suffer from any specific health problems (coagulation problems, if you regularly take Coumadin or Aspirin, suffer from any skin conditions in the scrotum area, etc.) please get in touch with Dr. Nélisse or Dr. Caouette before booking an appointment, by e-mail or by leaving him a voice message and he will get in touch with you.

Pre-operative Recommendations

You can either come alone or with someone. Whoever comes with you can assist at the surgery. If you come alone, you will be able to walk, use stairs or drive right after the surgery.

You need to bring your Medicare card with you. Make sure it is not expired. If you do not have a valid Medicare card, an additional amount will be added to the total cost of the surgery ( see The Cost ).

Shaving

You must shave you entire scrotum. You do not need to shave your thighs or hair above the penis. We recommend you use shaving cream and a razor. Electric shavers and hair removal creams(such as Neet or Nair) are extremely irritating and should not be used on your scrotum.

Tight Underwear

It is important that you wear a pair of tight underwear the day of the surgery. Do not wear boxers. Underwear that hold up the testicles are best.

Medication

Do not take Aspirin or anti-inflammatory pills such as Motrin or Advil during the week before your surgery. They can increase the risk of bleeding during the operation.

If you feel the need to take pain killers during this week, you can take acetaminophen (Tylenol or Atasol). The day after the surgery, you can start taking Aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medication.
